🚨 LIRR Fraud Scandal: Watchdog Uncovers Widespread Time Theft Scheme
According to a new investigative report, the MTA’s watchdog has uncovered a systemic “culture of fraud” inside the Long Island Rail Road’s car maintenance division. The findings reveal that dozens of employees — including supervisors — allegedly used cloned or fake ID badges to clock in and get paid for hours they never worked.
One foreman even bragged about sipping margaritas by the pool while “on the clock.” Some of the employees implicated were among the department’s highest overtime earners.
In response, LIRR leadership condemned the “corrupt” behavior, suspended employees without pay, and reinstated biometric scanning to prevent future abuse. However, prosecutors declined criminal charges due to gaps in internal controls that made the fraud difficult to prove.
This case underscores a critical takeaway for all organizations:
➡️ Weak controls invite misconduct — and strong controls prevent it.
