Union Ex-President Arrested on Theft and Wire Fraud Charges
🚨 Former Union President Charged With Embezzling $290,000 in Member Dues
Federal prosecutors announced the indictment of Kye Carbone, former president of the United Federation of College Teachers Local 1460, for allegedly stealing more than $290,000 in union funds over a 12-year period.
According to the charges, Carbone used member dues to pay for personal expenses, travel, restaurant outings, and even renovations on a private property. He now faces:
- 3 counts of wire fraud (up to 20 years per count)
- 27 counts of embezzlement from a labor union (up to 5 years per count)
He pled not guilty and is currently released pending trial. These remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Why this matters:
Financial misconduct erodes trust in organizations meant to protect workers. Regardless of industry or sector, strong financial oversight, transparent governance, and routine audits are essential to safeguarding employees and maintaining organizational credibility.
What additional safeguards do you believe unions and employers should adopt to prevent misuse of funds?
